The volunteer Application can be filled out online at our website or in person at our ReStore. The online Application is just one part of becoming a Volunteer. Once you have completed your application it will be sent to our volunteer Manager. The volunteer manager will review the information you provided and get back to you with an email or phone call within 1-3 days. It is also recommended that you join our Member Planet group page (https://www.memberplanet.com/loraincountyhabitat) where we post all upcoming volunteer opportunities that you can register for.
Where can I find Volunteer Opportunities?
Volunteer Opportunities are scheduled on our Volunteer Calendar found on our Member Planet group page. Once you join our group you are able to see all the events we have coming up and register to attend. You can also post discussions on the event pages with any specific questions or comments. If any photos were taken at the event they will also be loaded to the events page for all participants to see.
Is there anything I need to do before volunteering?
All new volunteers will need to speak with Pat, our Volunteer Manager, prior to volunteering at any event, unless they have already worked it out with another staff member. We want all our volunteers to be ambassadors of Habitat and understand the importance of the work that they do. Meeting with a staff member prior to volunteering helps us make sure that everyone understands the mission and the work that we do. In addition to being oriented to Habitat with Kelly you may also need to complete a safety waiver and safety training depending on the volunteer work you’re doing. All construction volunteers will be need to read and sign a safety waiver every time they work on the job site. We have waivers available on site and you can also download and print them from our website and Member Planet group page. If you are required to complete any online safety training you will be emailed the link to the training videos with instructions on how to access them.
What should I wear?
ReStore and construction volunteers should dress for the weather. The ReStore warehouse is often hot in the summer and cold in the winter. We recommend bringing extra clothing if necessary and you can leave it in your car if you don’t need it. All volunteers are allowed to wear short sleeves and shorts, but on days when you are working with power tools more coverage is recommended. Personal protective gear will be provided (safety glasses, gloves, ear plugs, and safety hats). Feel free to bring any extra gear you need, but make sure to keep an eye on it if you do.
Do I need to bring anything?
Our volunteer events range in times, but if you are working more than 3 hours we recommend that you bring a snack or lunch just in case. Also please try to bring water or a drink with you. Some facilities and sites may have water, but it’s always good to be prepared in case they do not. If you are working on the construction site you can also bring your signed safety waiver with you if you have a printer.
What if I can't stay for the whole event?
Please do your best to let us know as early as possible if you are only available for part of the event. Most often this is not an issue but it’s helpful to know when planning before the event. How old do you have to be to volunteer?
We do allow minors to volunteer with us, but all youth must be accompanied by an adult while they volunteer and they are restricted from certain activities. Minors are able to paint, landscape, clean, and do various other tasks on the construction site. They are also able to volunteer with an adult at our ReStore or in the office.
Can I bring someone with me?
We’d love it if you brought someone with you! Just make sure to let us know who else is coming with you so that we know how many volunteers to expect at the event and if possible have them register for the event on our Member Planet Group page.
What if I can't make it and I registered to help?
Please do your best to let us know as soon as possible about cancelling your attendance. You can call our office at 440-322-2355 and leave us a message or email our Director (who checks her email the most) at firstname.lastname@example.org
